Description

What are sildenafil and tadalafil?
These medications are both PDE5 inhibitors used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). They promote relaxation of blood vessels and increase blood flow to certain areas of the body.
What is the difference?
The main difference between the two medications is how long they work in the body. Both medications typically begin to work within about 30 to 60 minutes. We compound these medications as troches/lozenges or quick-dissolve sublingual tablets. Troches dissolve between the cheek and gum over about 15 to 30 minutes. Sublingual tablets dissolve quickly under the tongue. The medication is absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth and directly into the bloodstream.
Tadalafil is a once-daily medication that may work in the body for up to 36 hours. It is also used to treat ED and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Sildenafil is typically taken as needed 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity and may last up to 4 hours. If one medication does not help treat your ED, it is unlikely that the other will, as they function very similarly in the body.
Which one is right for me?
Pre-existing conditions, risk factors, and goals of therapy are the main reasons physicians and patients choose one instead of the other. Discuss your medical history and current ED symptoms with your physician before deciding which is right for you.
